Sew the Nell

Come along and sew the Nell; a timeless, easy-to-wear blouse or dress that will be on regular rotation in your wardrobe. Simple to sew, this mix ‘n’ match pattern includes multiple ways to construct and wear to give you a look that is all your own. In this day course, Wendy will guide you through the dressmaking process in order for you to go away with either a finished garment or the skills to complete at home. /p>

Ability Level: Beginner and up. You should have foundational knowledge of machine sewing in order to get the most out of this workshop.

Course Duration:Saturday 9th November, 10am - 4pm

You will learn:

-How to improve your dressmaking skills

- Learn how to read a pattern

- How to construct a garment

- How to sew buttonholes

You will need to bring:

Tools needed:

- A sewing machine in good working order.Please note that a machine that has been sat unused for some time will likely need a service to be able to run to its full potential.

- A buttonhole foot for your machine

- A basic sewing kit to include: dressmaking scissors, small scissors, dressmakers' pins, tape measure, seam ripper, hand sewing needles and safety pins

Materials needed:

- Main fabric – see requirements according to size and style: Light-to medium-weight woven fabrics such as cotton lawn, poplin, chambray, flannel, linen blends, Tencel, viscose. For the puffball sleeve, choose a fabric with body that will hold its shape. The straight sleeve dress could also be made in needlecord or lighter-weight denim.

- 90cm iron on interfacing

- Matching Thread

- 10-15mm (⅜-⅝in) wide buttons or sew-on snaps (for faux tie versions): 6 for straight blouse, 7 for peplum blouse, 10 for knee-length dress, or 11 for midi dress

- The pattern will be provided as part of the workshop

About your tutor:

Wendy is a bespoke dressmaker and costume maker. She studied fashion design and pattern cutting in London back in the 1970’s and also qualified in millinery. She started her career working for a London film and stage costumier, making costumes and has also worked in pattern cutting and size grading for a high street store. Since then, she has been dressmaking and making stage costume, historical costume, bridal and prom wear. Her speciality is working with finer fabrics with focus on detail and fit.
