Ultimate Learn to Knit Socks Workshop

In this workshop you’ll start to make your own pair of Toe-Up Socks, which is a really popular option for sock knitting, as you can try your socks on as you go - to ensure a perfect fit. You can also easily calculate yarn usage and never run out of yarn on the second foot, plus this method avoids the need to use “Kitchener Stitch” at the Toe!

During the workshop you will learn how to cast-on from at the toe and increase up from the toe, to the width of the foot, using the “Magic Loop Method”.

An 80cm circular needle is included with the workshop, but you can also opt to switch to a small circumference needle, from the end of the toe onwards if you wish. These can be purchased on the day from Truro Fabrics.

You will then learn the correct point to stop knitting the foot section, to create the heel shaping and will be guided through how to make a “German Short Row Heel’ and shown a stretchy “Cast-Off” method for the end of the cuff.

You will also have the benefit of being able to refer back to Wendy’s YouTube videos during the workshop or at home, if you need to check back or refresh yourself with any of the techniques learned afterwards.

The pattern included with the workshop includes the same pattern and fit for both a Toe-Up Sock and a Cuff-Down Sock. So your second sock can be either another Toe-Up Sock, or a traditional Cuff-Down Sock and will still match, the choice is yours!

Ability Level: Confident Beginner to Intermediate. You should have at least foundational knitting experience to get the most from this workshop.

Course Duration: Saturday 26th October, 10am -4pm

- An overview of knitting socks

- How to knit in the round using the “Magic Loop” method

- How to increase stitches

- How to work a “German Short Row Heel”

- How to work a stretchy Cast-Off

Tools and Materials:

A100g ball of sock yarn and a 2.5mm circular needle - both included as part of the workshop

About your tutor:

Wendy is a bespoke dressmaker and costume maker. She studied fashion design and pattern cutting in London back in the 1970’s and also qualified in millinery. She started her career working for a London film and stage costumier, making costumes and has also worked in pattern cutting and size grading for a high street store. Since then, she has been dressmaking and making stage costume, historical costume, bridal and prom wear. Her speciality is working with finer fabrics with focus on detail and fit.
