*Our quick guide on How to Care for Denim Fabric*
Denim is a hardworking fabric that gets better with age, but proper care is key to keeping it looking and feeling its best. Follow these tips to maintain the colour, texture, and longevity of your denim projects.
1. Pre-Wash is Essential!
Before sewing, always pre-wash your denim to prevent shrinkage later. Wash it on a cold or lukewarm cycle with mild detergent and air dry to keep the fabric’s structure intact.
2. Wash Less, Wear More
Denim doesn’t need frequent washing. Instead, spot-clean small stains and air your garments to keep them fresh. When a full wash is necessary, turn items inside out and use a cold wash to preserve colour.
3. Avoid Harsh Detergents
Opt for a gentle, non-bio detergent to prevent fading and keep denim soft. Avoid bleach or fabric softeners, as they can break down fibres and dull the colour.
4. Skip the Tumble Dryer (If You Can!)
High heat can cause denim to shrink and weaken over time. Air dry where possible, laying flat or hanging to maintain its shape. If using a dryer, choose low heat to reduce stress on the fabric.
5. Iron with Care
Denim doesn’t need much ironing, but if wrinkles appear, use a medium heat setting with steam. For stubborn creases, a damp cloth between the iron and fabric works wonders.
By following these simple steps, your denim will stay strong, stylish, and comfortable for years to come!
