The Folkwear 123 Austrian Dirndl is a PDF sewing pattern for creating a traditional three-piece dirndl outfit, available in Misses' sizes XS–3XL. Dating back to the Renaissance, the dirndl remains one of the few regional costumes still widely worn in Austria, southern Germany and Switzerland. It is also a popular choice for Renaissance Faires and Oktoberfest celebrations.
The complete outfit consists of a close-fitting, sleeveless bodice with an attached full skirt, worn over a blouse and finished with a contrasting apron. With two bodice and blouse combinations, you can choose the style that best suits your preferred fit and look.
View A features a bodice cut just above the bustline, fastening with buttons down the front to the waist. Its accompanying blouse has a lightly gathered jewel neckline finished with a self-tie.
View B has a wider, deeper bodice that sits below the fullest part of the bust. It is fitted with bones and small gussets, with a front opening secured by hooks and eyes. The matching blouse gathers at the front into a square neckline. Both blouse options feature gathered sleeves with an encased elastic band that creates a ruffle at the elbow.
There are plenty of opportunities to customise your dirndl, with knee-length or low-calf-length skirt options, high or low-neck bodices, high or low-neck blouse variations and a contrasting apron. The pattern also includes options for detailing, ruffling, ruching and shaping, along with information about authentic detailing, custom fitting and adapting the garments for Renaissance costumes.
For the dirndl itself, choose medium to heavyweight cotton, silk, wool, velvet or corduroy. Lighter fabrics such as cotton, silk, rayon and blends are recommended for the blouse and apron, with taffeta offering another option for the apron.
