The Folkwear 254 Swing Coat is an easy-to-make, relaxed coat with a generous swing shape and just four main pattern pieces. Its simple construction makes it a straightforward project, while the distinctive collar and deep back pleat give it plenty of character.

The front pieces have extended neck sections that join at the centre back to create the collar. At the back, a shaped yoke sits above a deep pleat, giving the coat extra volume and movement.

The sleeves are narrow at the wrists, so you can push them up for a more casual look. The pattern also includes two pocket options: neat side-seam pockets or practical patch pockets.

Make it in soft linen or cotton twill for an easy everyday layer, choose gabardine for a more structured finish, or experiment with silk taffeta for a crisp, sculptural shape. Lightweight silk organza offers the option of a sheer, translucent coat.

Choose a fabric that drapes well but still has enough body to hold the coat's shape. Suitable options include:
