Create your own pair of modern wide-leg trousers with the Paradise Patterns Protea Pants PDF sewing pattern. Designed with a high waist, sweeping full-length legs and a curved waistband, these trousers have a relaxed fit through the hips and thighs, with two front options to suit your style.
View A features front pleats that create extra volume through the legs, while View B has a clean, flat front without pleats. Both versions have a zip fly, in-seam side pockets that connect to the centre front, belt loops and a fitted waist with plenty of room through the hips and thighs. You can also add optional topstitching for a more defined finish.
The pattern includes two waistband construction methods. Choose the topstitched waistband for light to medium-weight fabrics, or the clean-finish method for medium to heavyweight fabrics and a more traditional trouser finish. You'll also learn how to make an easy zipper fly and use a special technique to keep the front pleats neatly folded.
Fabric choice will change the look and feel of your finished trousers. Try a drapey viscose or Tencel twill for fluid movement, linen or a cotton-linen blend for relaxed everyday trousers, or corduroy, denim and wool for a more substantial pair. Choose a fabric with good drape that won't stretch or grow during construction or wear.

Choose a fabric with good drape that will hold its shape during construction and wear. The Protea Pants can be made in a range of weights, depending on the look you want:
- Rayon, Tencel or Lyocell twill
- Rayon challis or crepe
- Linen and linen blends
- Cotton
- Lightweight to heavyweight wool
- Corduroy
- Denim
- Silk and satin
Lightweight, drapey fabrics create fluid, flowing trousers, while midweight cotton or linen gives a more relaxed finish. Choose a midweight to heavyweight fabric for a more structured winter style.
- Zip
- Button approximately ¾ inch (28–36 Ligne) in diameter
- Lightweight woven interfacing
- Double-fold bias tape, the length of your waist, only if using thick fabric or the clean-finish waistband construction
For lightweight fabrics, you can use your main fabric for the pocket lining and facing instead of a separate fabric.
