Sewing Level: Confident Beginner

The Ruby Vest works with a wide variety of woven fabrics, making it a great pattern for experimenting with different textures, weights and combinations. Cotton and linen fabrics between approximately 3–7 oz per square yard are particularly suitable.

  • Quilting cotton
  • Light to medium-weight cotton
  • Linen
  • Flannel
  • Sherpa
  • Pre-quilted fabric
  • Other suitable woven fabrics

For a reversible vest, consider combining two contrasting or complementary fabrics to create a different look on each side. Knit fabrics with a lot of stretch are not recommended.

To complete the Ruby Vest you will need:

  • Main fabric
  • Contrast or coordinating fabric for the reversible side
  • Fastening of your choice, such as ties, toggles or buttons
  • Thread
  • Optional quilting materials
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Fabric scissors

Note: If making your own bias binding, avoid using heavier fabrics as they can make the construction more difficult.
