The Paradise Patterns Smultron Dress is a relaxed, voluminous woven dress with a flattering bias cut and plenty of ways to customise the finished style. Choose between two neckline and back variations, adjust the length or add optional tiers to create a dress that suits your wardrobe.
View A is a short, half-circle bias-cut dress with a V-neck yoke, spaghetti straps and an elasticated back. You'll learn how to make spaghetti straps, cut fabric on the bias and sew French seams.
View B has a slightly curved neckline, spaghetti straps and a tie-back fastening, with a French-seam slit at the centre back. The instructions cover the same techniques as View A, with the additional construction of the centre-back slit.
You can also mix the two designs, adding the tie-back to View A or the elasticated back to View B. The pattern explains how to lengthen or shorten the dress and add optional tiers, making it easy to experiment with different proportions.
The bias cut works particularly well with gingham and check fabrics, while linen, cotton, rayon challis and other woven fabrics offer plenty of options for different finishes.

The Smultron Dress works with a wide range of woven fabrics. Choose a lightweight to medium-weight fabric with enough drape to follow the bias-cut shape.
- Linen and linen blends
- Cotton
- Chambray
- Rayon challis and twill
- Taffeta
- Seersucker
Gingham and check fabrics are particularly effective on the bias, creating a distinctive diagonal pattern across the dress.
- Rat-tail cording or string for straps, approximately 1 yard (1 metre), or a loop turner to make fabric straps
- 1.25-inch (3cm) non-roll elastic, 30 inches (70cm) long, for View A
- Lightweight interfacing for the front yoke
- Safety pin
